Lessons Learned along the Way”
Speaker: James A. McNamara DDS, MS, PhD
Bulgarian Orthodontic Society
Sofia, Bulgaria – September 15, 2018

Synopsis:Dr. James A. McNamara has been an orthodontic resident, doctoral student, university professor, teacher and researcher, international lecturer, and private practitioner during his long and productive career.  His broad experience in both clinical and experimental arenas and his worldwide travels have provided him a unique opportunity to synthesize an approach to orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics that not only is evidence-based but also is focused on the art of orthodontics.  His treatment protocols have evolved steadily since the early 1970s.
The course will consider specific topics in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.  Whenever possible, an evidence-based approach will be used to determine appropriate treatment protocols.  Topics to be discussed include:
• The importance of treatment timing according to malocclusion type.
• The role of the cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) method in diagnosis and treatment planning.
• The use of the facial mask& bonded RME, Carriere Motion and bone-anchored intermaxillary elastics in growing Class III patients.
• The use of rapid maxillary expansion in the treatment of tooth-size/arch-size problems.
• Creation of spontaneous improvement of Class II and Class III malocclusion.
• Definitive Class II correction with the Pendex, Herbst and Carriere Motion appliances.

Course objectives:
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
• Properly time the treatment intervention in patients with Class II and Class II malocclusions as well as with tooth-size/arch-size discrepancies
• Apply the CVM method in routine practice
• Become familiar with three types of Class III treatment in growing patients
• Understand the many used of rapid maxillary expansion
